Project Management – What Can Go Wrong, and How to Avoid It!

How many projects fail? Depending on where you are looking for …

There is a common perception that most projects fail – though oddly enough statistics are somewhat vague. Since the few companies that want to admit to failure, the data is certainly imperfect, but anecdotally, we know only too well how …

So here are some reasons for this failure, and some thoughts on how to manage them – this is not a definitive list and a quick Google search will give you countless examples more. This is a summary of a few:

1. Unclear goals: do not know if the project team really know what the organization really wants, it will be difficult to determine how to be successful. As blogged these rights helps enormously, as I said, have often determine what too often surprising given the high wave direction. Get a document defining the project and voted in favor. If you do not look at the problem # 3;
2. Objectives are so often these changes, and rework changed importance of different processes, analysis, methods, requirements of the team, and sometimes even suppliers. Clearly the use and application of the DP above, you can ensure you receive a change request signed by the proponent, and helps ensure that people who paid for the work a better idea of the impact of changes later, the project cost, time and quality of delivery;
3. Poor governance: A project must receive at least three levels of authority and of the contribution. To learn more about the team and responsibilities, see my previous blog (see below) – and make sure that your organization has a board level sponsor, or you will be a lack of attention and resources affected by others, the areas in where the Council has to seek influence;
4. Inadequate budget: There is a clear link is often missed by the management – not enough money means giving something eventually. Ensure a budget line of its own budget and the developers are doing the level of problems early enough to be something about them;
5. poor people: The number of laws, the experience or the ability of the law. Make sure you have a good mix of experience, enthusiasm and energy, and make your sponsor is aware of resource issues and consequences. It may take some time to freewheel is a high quality and likely to burn people;
6. Lack of time: As mentioned above, are the three pillars of a joint project time, cost and quality, and the time is probably the factor that applies to most of the success of a project. Everything takes time and not everyone sees how it is spent – especially for larger projects, spent time in different places with different teams and people mean when the visibility becomes a problem. Talk to those who know that very often the problems must be identified early;
7. Inadequate analysis: The pressure may be exerted for the early visible results, and said project feel the need to resolve the issue and implementation of this solution – before a fairly complete understanding of the issue and consequences. Talk to people who know the problem before making the call about the possibilities and the assumptions behind the reaction;

The answers?

There are a lot of communication – the right person at the right time with the right information and a suggested solution.

However, more likely, the use of the management methodology of law and ensure the objectives, activities organized – and note the progress made and obstacles, set the project proponent if the project risk of failure.

These views and their possible solutions are not always save a project. But while the challenges are listed, the chances of failure increase, the proposals should reduce the probability of failure.
